2. ISTAT Italian wine production figures for 2003
 Because of the record-setting heat wave and lack of rainfall, 2003 harvest was the smallest in 20 years, producing just 44 million hectoliters of wine and must (-1% compared to 2002). The Veneto region though, stood out as the production leader Despite the extremely dry summer, Sicily was second with a production of 6.56 million hectoliters, or 6% more than in 2002, thanks to the extra water stored during the previous winter. Apulia was third was with 6.09 million hectoliters, or 9% more than in 2002.
The rest of the southern regions marked a decrease in production, as was the case of all of Central Italy. The Marches region was down 25%, Latium 15% and Tuscany 2%. In the area, only the Umbria region showed a growth of 5% compared to 2002.
Output was mixed in the northern regions. In addition to Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino Alto Adige produced more than the previous year. On the other hand, Emilia Romagna and Piedmont produced 7% and 2% less respectively than the previous year.
Nationally, the balance between the qualities of red and white wines was at the same levels of the previous years, though locally were reported substantial changes.
Regionally, Calabria produced 93% of red wines, Tuscany 80%, and Basilicata the 78% of the total.
In volume though, Apulia was the region that produced the most red wines on a regional basis, or 3.29 million hectoliters, followed by Emilia and Veneto, that produced about 3 million hectoliters each.
The regions that produced the most white wines were Latium, with 86% of the regional total, and Sicily with 73%. Veneto was the region that produced the greatest quantity of white wines though, with 4.31 million hectoliters, followed by Sicily with 3.62 million hectoliters. Apulia is the third region with 2.46 million hectoliters.
