Professional Classes for Enotourism Operators
Staff Writer - September 14, 2003

Summer 2003 showed that enological tourism represents a growing share of regional traveling, non only within well-known wine producing regions such as Piedmont, Tuscany and Veneto, but all over Italy. Millions of tourists participated in the Cantine Aperte, or "Open Wineries" the last weekend on May, and then continued, up and down the peninsula all year long. The whole package, including wine, gastronomy, culture and territory attract a growing number of travelers.

Unfortunately, the weak link of enotourism is the lack of specifically trained professionals able to support producers, tour operators and local administrations in organizing and managing enological tourism. Clearly, enotourism needs travel professionals to organize the basic rour structure.

In Abruzzo, though there's the Scuola di Operatori Enoturistici, or "Enotourist Operator School", established by the Accademia di Cultura Enologica, or the "Academy of Enological Culture". The Academy is the product of 20 years of professional committment in enology, enogastronomy, tourism and professional training. The course is for professional operators but open to anyone wishing to learn more about wine making as well as to acquire professional knowledge specific to the segment.

The weekday classes last from November 2003 to March 2004 and will be scheduled to allow the participation of people with job commitments.

The subjects range from History and Culture, to Vine and Enological Technique, to Tasting, to Communication, to Tourist Management, to Animation and Knowledge of the Territory. The course will be capped by a hands on experience in a winery and the writing of a final tesina (small thesis).

The objective is to empower the participants with the professional and management skills needed to deliver enotouristic packages and create events that promote local areas and local business operators.

An Attestato di Formazione in Enoturismo, or "Diploma of Vocational Training in Enotourism" and the first level of Sommelier will be awarded to the participants who pass the final exam.
