Agriturismo

Agriturismo, which is probably rooted in the cultural tradition of a weekend trip to the countryside to either visit a farmer friend or buy fruit, vegetables and wine directly from the grower / producer, has become a trendy cultural phenomenon of significant proportions hosting over 105,000 people per year.

According to some, the Italian agriturismo began in 1965, the year that Confagricoltura, the Italian agricultural union, founded Agriturist, the very first organization of its kind at the time in Italy. According to others though, the trend originated with the need to find new sources of income for the weak agricultural sector. Whichever the truth, from the large ranches managed by the big national financial groups, to the small mom-and-pop enterprises, the agriturismo industry has proven to be a winner for many big, medium, small, and even tiny rural enterprises. The result is a great variety within the agriturismo offerings. One may choose from luscious country villas in the Tuscan hills, rural cabins hidden among Cinque Terre's impervious vineyards, or stone buildings by the balmy coast of Sardinia.
