The Chef's Corner

ChefAugust is the Italian month dedicated to the summer vacation. Don't try to get any serious work done this month, rather enjoy, especially on the 15th, the holy of holiest, cities like Rome or Milan, bustling with life and people all year long, suddenly deserted, but for a few, smart human beings that have chosen to enjoy the majestic piazzas and empty streets.

  • Tortelli di zucca al burro e salvia fritta (Pumpkin Tortelli [Stuffed Pasta] with Butter and Fried Sage, see recipe)

The journey through the discovery of the Italian Native Vines takes us now to Sardinia, the homeland of ancient grapes. Some of the ancient vines were probably brought over by long-gone invaders, however, due to the unique climate and soil of the island, the grapes have developed a personality and characteristics of their own. That's the case with the Vermentino, a relatively recent import which, especially in the Gallura wine zone, produces a uniquely crisp and aromatic white wine.

Among the interesting articles for this summer, check out the first part of the results of the latest Gallup's measurement of Americans' drinking preferences, which shows that, for the first time ever, US drinkers favor wine over beer. We believe that this is just the beginning and, in years to come, wine will definitely surpass beer as the favorite alcoholic drink in the US. The other installments will be published during August.

We also publish a UIV/Ismea report about the state of the Italian vineyard in this record high European summer that is creating serious problem across the continent. Interesting also the results of a recent symposium in Rome. Italy where worldwide researchers agree upon the healthful effect of white wine, producer of 'good' cholesterol and inhibitor of 'bad' cholesterol. In addition, if you are in Tuscany between August 5 and August 21st, don't miss the Tuscan Sun Festival.

We added a wealth of new labels, so be sure to check out Italian Wine Labels which, we believe, with over 800 labels is now the most comprehensive Italian wine label gallery online.

From all WineCountry.IT staff, happy reading, and enjoy the summer with cool, crisp summer wines.

Loris Scagliarini,
