To introduce the Company of the Month for December 2004, we move all the way to the south of Italy, right down to the heel of the boot, and point our attention to the Accademia dei Racemi, or The Racemi Academy, from Manduria, the homeland of the ancient Primitivo vines that grow only in this region of Italy and which have the same DNA as that of the American Zinfandel.

Welcome to Volume II, Number 12 of Wine News, the e-Letter from the WineCountry.IT network. (If you have problems visualizing the e-letter, please click here to see the online version in your browser window. Usa il link seguente se vuoi accedere alla Versione Italiana)
While we were preparing the December e-letter we heard the sad news of Luigi Veronelli's death. We mourn his loss along with his family, and the Italian enogastronomy writers and professionals. With him, Italy loses one of the first and most tenacious promoters of quality products.
Meanwhile, wintertime, the holiday season and a new year are approaching fast. As a present to the wine label collector among our readers, we posted over 100 new Italian wine labels.
To read the full version of the articles below, please follow the links to the English version published on WineCountry.IT, Italian Wine Hub and Italian Wine Labels. The Italian versions are published on Vino Italiano Club and ABC Vino and in a different section of WineCountry.IT,
As usual, the 'Dates to Remember' closes the monthly e-Letter. To see the updated list during the month please visit the specific section on WineCountry.IT.
Happy reading and pleasant sipping by the fire from the friendly staff here at WineCountry.IT network. |

'Sideways': A California Wine Movie |
| |
Payne obviously took notes. His new movie "Sideways" has to be the only film to ever get a laugh out of a reference to "secondary malolactic fermentation." Name-dropping '61 Chateau Cheval Blanc and wineries from Sea Smoke to Opus One, the film has impressed critics and enophiles alike. In fact, Time magazine recently called it "the best American movie of the year."

Fish bladders, eggs, copper, milk -- are they really in that bottle of Syrah? They might have been at some point. Winemaking may be called an art, but there's plenty of science involved in the process, and some of the substances thrown in the tank along the way might surprise you.

All in the Sebastianis (Second of five parts) |
| |
Sam and Vicki Sebastiani's eventual project is an ambitious shrine to food and wine from Italy and California, built on the rock-quarry land where grandfather Samuele Sebastiani once worked at the southern edge of Sonoma County. Most of the land is natural wetlands, but it's also high enough for a great view of the Sonoma wine country, including the southernmost Carneros vineyards, and the perfect gateway stop for tourists headed north from San Francisco.
