The Sangiovese Montesodi 2004 Chianti Rufina DOCG by Marchesi di Frescobaldi was the winner for the red wine category, while for the white wine the honor went to the Greco di Tufo Loggia della Serra 2006 DOCG. by Terredora. The best passito dessert award went to Passito di Pantelleria DOC Ben Ryè 2005, by Donnafugata.
The procedure followed to assign the awards was quite unusual. In a preliminary phase, during the weeks preceeding the opening of VitignoItalia, a commission of professional sommeliers, all members of the AIS, selected a total of 17 wines for the three competing cathegories, in a blind tasting. The commission, lead by Stefano Continisio, included the following professional sommeliers and wine tatsters:
- Antonella Bevilacqua,
- Stefania Cozzolino,
- Michela Guadagno,
- Tommaso Luongo,
- Paride Cimbalo,
- Vittorio Cioffi,
- Franco De Luca,
- Giulia Cannada Bartoli.
For the final part of the competition, which took place at 2:00PM on Sunday, May 20, 2007 in the AIS space at Vitignoitalia, a jury of 25 non-professional tasters was selected from among the event partecipants. These jurors selected the winners from the 17 pre-selected wines in a blind tasting, awarding them from 1 to 10 points to the visual, taste and olfactory perception for each wine.
