Monday, November 22, 2004 during a gala evening at the Trade Show Pavilion in Faenza, Italy, in the presence of former bicycle champion and currently TV sport commentator and opinion leader for the TV show RaiSport, Davide Cassani, was assigned the 2004 annual award Master del Sangiovese - Trofeo Ente Tutela Vini di Romagna (Sangiovese Master - Protection of the Romagna Wines Trophy). The competition is among the most important in Italy, as the centerfold is Sangiovese, which is one of the most noble grapes in the Italian and international wine world.

The event is organized by the Ente Tutela Vini di Romagna (Protection of the Romagna Wine Association) and the AIS. (Associazione Italiana Sommelier, or Italian Association of Sommeliers), in collaboration with the Enoteca Regionale Emilia Romagna (Emilia Romagna Regional Wine Library). Luigi Perazzo, an AIS professional sommelier from Milan, where he manages the restaurant La Dolce Vita (from the famous Fellini movie title, meaning "The Sweet Life"), won the prestigious award.
The contest includes written and oral tests, as well as the hands-on service and tasting tests. The second place went to Cristiano Cini from Arezzo, winner of the Tuscany sommelier competition in 2003, and Rudy Travagli from Cervia, who came in third. A very satisfied Perazzo saw the outcome as the confirmation of his own professional growth, as he came in second at last year's Master del Sangiovese.
The winner for the category of non-professional Sommelier member of the AIS, to whom the contest was open for the first time with a special section, was Pietro Vicchi, followed by Catia Brusoni from Sesto Fiorentino and Eugenio Baldi from Faenza, both in second position with the same number of votes.
The jury of expert sommeliers included:
- Terenzio Medri, AIS national president,
- Roberto Gardini, head of AIS competition,
- Maria Grazia Galdini, winner of the First Master del Sangiovese 2000,
- Elio Assirelli, president of the Ente Tutela Vini di Romagna,
- Gian Alfonso Roda, president of the Enoteca Regionale dell’Emilia Romagna,
- Giancarlo Mondini, president of the AIS Romagna chapter,
- Giodano Zinzani, president of the Romagna chapter of Assoenologi (the Italian association of enologists), and
- Luca Gardini, winner of last year annual.
