The Selezione del Sindaco 2008 Staff Writer - June 2, 2008
The Selezione del Sindaco (Mayor's Selection Competition) is the only international wine competition in which the local administration of the production area where one wine is produced competes alongside the selected producers. The goal of the competition is to promote small and boutique quality producers inspired by tradition and a well defined wine producing area. The participation is limited to quality wines produced under the Italian DOCG, DOC, IGT appellations produced in small quantities. Because of the educational intent of the event, each year a different agricultural school is involved in the project.
The 2008 annual competition took place at the former monastery of Santa Maria (Saint Mary), of Valle di Cividale, along the Strada Colli Orientali del Friuli (Wine Road of the Eastern Hills of Friuli). There, from May 30, to June 1, the international jury, including enologists, wine technicians, tasters, sommeliers and trade journalists, evaluated the participating labels.
The Picolit dessert wine produced by the Azienda Vigna Petrussa from Prepotto, in the province of Udine, took the top position, and the Amarone 'Vigneti Osan, another dessert wine, ' by Azienda Corteforte from Fumane, in the province of Verona won the second one of the two Gran Medaglia d'Oro (Great Gold Medals) assigned. Two passito wines (wines made with partially withered grapes) very different from one another earned the top position of the competition created by the Cittą del Vino (Wine Cities). A perfect celebration for the new DOCG denomination assigned to the Picolit.
In addition to the two top positions, 51 gold medals and 229 silver medals were assigned.
The Veneto and Sicily regions stood out with 13 and 12 gold medals, or almost 50% of the gold assigned to wines which scored 88+ points on a 100-point scale. Veneto also took home 51 silver medals, awarded to wines which scored between 84.75 and 87.99 points, followed by Emilia Romagna with 30 medals.
Castelvetro in the province of Modena, and Mazara del Vallo were the two municipalities which earned the most gold medals, with three each. The municipalities of Valdobbiadene and Marsala brought home the highest number of silver medals, with 10 and 9 awards each.
