Italy's Wine Production to be Among Lowest in 50 Years
Staff Writer - September 1, 2007

Italy's 2007 wine production is expected to be among the lowest in the last 50 years, totaling around 43.2 million hectoliters (over 1,141 million gallons), or 13% less than 2006.

Vendemmia

That's what Assoenologi, the Association of Italian Enologists, said Saturday, September 1, 2007. The exceptionally warm weather last winter, followed by warmer than usual April, July and August, had ripened the grapes up to three weeks earlier than usual, especially in the south of Italy.

Overall, the weather was wetter in the northern part of the country, with some more rainfall than in the south. Assoenologi predicted that quality would be mixed, with some exceptional vintages and other in their normal high quality level.

Because of the smaller production, wholesale prices are expected to rise between 5% and 20%.
