Xmas: According to Coldiretti, Only Two Percent of Bubbly Wine purchased in Italy is Champagne Staff Writer - December 17, 2004
Only two percent of all bubbly wine purchased by Italian families is French Champagne. The vast majority of Italians favor their own Spumante wines.
That is the result of a bubbly wine research conducted by Ismea-AcNiesen which reveals that most Italian families prefer Spumante wines to the cousin from across the Alps.
Sixty per cent of the total sale of Spumante in Italy takes place between mid November and mid January – says Coldiretti (the Italian grower association) – which highlights the fact that this kind of wine is still very much an holiday season beverage.
According to the latest figures from the Italian Wine & Food Institute, the export of Spumante to the U S has risen by 10 percent in the first 3 quarters of 2004, this in spite of a 9.9 percent decline of the overall sales of Italian wines in the U S in the same period.
