Good Year for Valdobbiadene Prosecco, Exports Rise Staff Writer - September 12, 2004
Treviso, Italy - This should be good year for the Valdobbiadene Prosecco wine, one of Italy's most exported wines.
The production of grapes is expected to increase by 15 percent, reaching about 3,620 tons in Treviso (1,360 tons red and 2,260 tons white). Just over 3,150 tons of grapes were harvested last year (1,180 tons red and 1,970 tons white ).
The Valdobbiadene Conegliano Prosecco should go up "only" by 10 percent, because of a heavy rainfall in spring. This factor though, will contribute to increasing the overall quality.
"The year 2004," assured Gianluca Bisol, owner of one of the most important Italian wine farms, "will give us a very smooth Valdobbiadene Prosecco, with extremely refined fruity aromas".
Hence, the Italian 'spumante' is getting ready to meet the growing national and international demand, which totaled 39,480,000 bottles in 2003.
This year Italian 'spumante' wines have already seen a true export boom in the U S, reaching a 32.7 percent increase in the first eight months of 2004.
