Bottle Shock: The Movie Staff Writer - July 21, 2008
Bottle Shock, the movie about inspired novice vintner, Jim Barrett, who risked everything to realize his dream of creating the perfect hand-crafted California Chardonnay, and the famed 1976 'Judgment of Paris', hits the theaters at the beginning of August.
There are certain unforgettable moments in history when the US has triumphed against long odds and proved itself to the rest of the world, such as Neil Armstrong setting foot on the moon, or when in 1976 a small United States winery sent shock waves through the wine industry by besting the exalted French wines in a blind tasting, putting California on the world wine map for good. This second example has never received the recognition it deserves, that is, until now.
It's 1976, and while Barrett (Bill Pullman), a former attorney, and his free-spirited son Bo (Chris Pine) sparr with each other and share the dream of producing a great Chardonnay at the Chateau Montelena vineyard in Calistoga, in Paris, France, a struggling wine seller by the name of Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman) came up with an idea for a publicity stunt to help his floundering shop.
Little did Spurrier and Barrett realize they were about to change the history of wine forever thanks to what has become known as the 'Judgment of Paris'.
