Italian/French Wine Exports to U S Hammered
Staff Writer - December 10, 2004

U S Wine ImportItalian wine exports to the U S took a fall in the first nine months of 2004. The Italian Wine and Food Institute (IWFI) said on December 8, 2004 that exports had dropped almost 10% compared to the same period the previous year. The IWFI added that French wine exports to the U S had fallen by 11% in the same period.

On the other hand, Australian wine exports to the U S in the period from January to September surged by 20%.

The institute pointed the finger to to high prices, due to a certain extent to the weak U S dollar, for the drop in Italian and French wine exports.

US wine imports increased overall by 2.6% in terms of volume to about 4.15 million hectoliters (about 109.6 million gallons), but fell by 0.4% in terms of value to $1.92 billion (€1.437 billion), due to the decrease in prices of all exporting countries over the period.

Wine imports from Italy dropped by 9.9% in terms of volume to 1.285 million hectoliters (about 33.95 million gallons) and by 1.1% in value to $602 million (€452.2 million).

Italy's share of the US wine market is 31% in volume and 31.3% in value.
