Italian Wine Is Top Import in the United States Staff Writer - August 13, 2004
Based on data released by the Italian Wine and Food Institute regarding the first five months of 2004, Coldiretti stated that "French wine is beaten also by Australian wines, in second place after Italian wines, which in 2004 are the most sought after 'foreign' wines in the United States."
The leadership of Italian U S exports over the 'cousins' from across the Alps keeps increasing. In fact Italian wine imports grew 2.9 percent, while in the same period French wine imports dropped 26.7 percent and Australian wines increased a record 16.7 percent.
Almost a third of a dollar spent on imported wines in the U S these days buys Italian wines.
According to data from ISMEA however, France is expected to be the top world wine producer in 2004 with a forecast production of 57 million hectoliters, far above the estimated 49 million hectoliters that will be produced by Italy during the same vintage.
