A food-safety agency reveled today that in the past 12 months Germany seized close to 3 million liters of bulk wine imported from Italy and Spain, because analyses revealed that it contained added glycerine. The wine, both dry and sparkling, was destined to be blended with other wines in the Rhineland Palatinate region.

Industrial glycerine is harmless to drinkers and is added to make wine taste better, however it is not allowed under European wine production rules.

According to German food inspection agents, the wine was discovered during routine checks. At a winery near the western city of Trier, 1.7 million liters of sparkling wine intended for base of a blend have been seized.
