"Piero came to Chile in February 2002," remembers Mr. Matte, a Chilean entrepreneur and race horse owner who completed construction on his own winery in 2000. "After visiting the facilities and tasting the wines that we produced, he proposed joining forces to create a joint venture comparable to Almaviva," continued Eduardo Matte.
The new wine is yet unnamed nor has the price been determined, but we do know that the wine is made primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère. The initial 2001 vintage produced only 500 cases and is slated for release in the United States at the beginning of 2004. Antinori / Haras plan to increase production up to 10,000 cases annually over the next five years.
The winery is located in the Pirque region of Chile and uses only estate-grown fruit from its 360-plus acres (145 hectares) of vineyards. The new wine is made with select grapes from some of Haras de Pirque's best vineyards.
The creators of the wine are Álvaro Espinoza, one of Chile's most talented winemakers, and Renzo Cotarella, Antinori's chief enologist.
