A new study involving one million people, conducted by the Università Cattolica (Catholic University) of Campobasso, found that drinking wine in moderation has a healthful effect. These positive data confirm the results of other research done by other institutions in various parts of the world.

In particular, the study confirms the beneficial effects of the polyphenols found in red wine, which appear to reduce mortality (read the Donati report about the research – in Italian only).

Surprisingly, Lambrusco has turned out to provide an extra beneficial effect, because of its Cumarina content. The Cumarina is a compound used in farmacology for its anticoagulant characteristics, which works at the emetic and parietal level. The use of this compound is mandatory (at last in Italy) in post-heart attack patient treatment.

To find out more about this "Emilian Paradox", read the report by professor Carlo Fernandez about the research commissioned to the Istituto Mario Negri Sud in 1999. The Istituto Mario Negri is an internationally renown pharmacological and bio-medical Italian research center.
