Introduced the AIS Wine Guides La Romagna da Bere and L'Emilia da Bere 2008 – 2009 Staff Writer - July 15, 2008
Monday, June 14, 2008, at the Regional Enoteca in Dozza, a town in the province of Bologna, the 84 vini eccellenti (excellent wines) or the top regional wines according to the Italian Association of Sommeliers' (Associazione Italiana Sommeliers, or AIS) guides entitled Emilia da Bere (Emilia to Drink) and Romagna da Bere (Romagna to Drink), received their awards in the presence of the Regional Agriculture Councilor, Tiberio Rabboni, and the two presidents of the AIS chapters of Emilia and Romagna.
La Romagna da Bere and L'Emilia da Bere are two guides which introduce wines, wineries, and typical local food products. The guides, whose current edition is the fifth, are published by PrimaPagina Editore in collaboration with the Romagna and Emilia chapters of the Associazione Italiana Sommeliers, are a reference tool for anyone who likes to discover the varieties and characteristics of the wines from the Emilia Romagna region.
The two volumes, which consist of 800 pages in color, feature 600 tasted wines and introduce 2,000 labels produced by 300 wineries. These volumes were presented officially Monday, June 14, 2008, at Dozza's Enoteca Regionale in the presence of the Regional Agriculture Councilor, Tiberio Rabboni, and the national AIS president, Terenzio Medri. In addition to the provincial administrations of Rimini, Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena, Bologna, Reggio Emilia and Parma, as well as the Chambes of Commerce of Forlì-Cesena and Piacenza contributed to the realization of the two guides.

Thanks to the regional project entitled Emilia Romagna è un Mare di Sapori (Emilia Romagna is an Sea of Flavors), which 'adopted' the guides as the calling card to promote the whole area. The two volumes will be in the local bookstores and newsstands starting the beginning of July. In addition, the guides will be available at hotels and restaurants of the Romagna riviera, for the pleasure of the millions of tourists who every summer 'invade' the coastal towns of this region. Furthermore, the two guides will be at the core of the event series entitled Tramonto Divino, consisting of four special evenings during which wine tasting and specialty food sampling will be paired with shows, music and other entertaining activities.
Despite the fact that the guides are published as stand-alone books, they are perfectly integrated in their format, graphic layout, consistency of contents, and publication date. Including the English translation, the guides offer an exhaustive and detailed cross section of the Emilia Romagna wine, and food specialties, as well as enogastronomy focused tourism.
In addition to the profiles of the tasted wines, the guides include valuable information about the types of wine, vintages, grape varieties, blends and suggested retail cost for over 2,000 labels produced by over 300 wineries, which are introduced briefly as well.
Since La Romagna da Bere and L'Emilia da Bere are official AIS guides, they offer precious advice about tasting techniques and wine-food pairing. This information is organized according to the tested AIS methodology. An introduction to the most enticing wine and food tourist itineraries along the regional strade dei vini e dei sapori (wine and flavor roads) completes the two books.
In this Italian region in particular, the local gastronomy must not be overlooked, thus the two guides have several pages dedicated to the typical local products, starting with the amazing array of DOP and IGP products, of which Emilia Romagna counts the largest amount among the Italian regions.
The 'Excellent Wines' of Emilia Romagna
The wines which where awarded the title 'excellent' by the AIS tasters are 84: 36 from Emilia and 48 from Romagna.
All wines were blind tasted and the 'excellent' title awarded to those wines which gained at least 85/100 points, the minimum score required by the local Emilia and Romagna AIS chapters. The score of each wine is graphically represented in the guides by the number of color filled grapes in the bunch symbol printed with the description of each wine. The symbol of the star highlights the wines which were awarded .
