Staff Writer - October 31, 2004

Over 650 quality labels, 238 wine tasted, 119 producers, the typical specialties and the pairings.

Wine BottleLa Romagna da Bere 2005, or "The Drinkable Romagna Region", the first guide to the wines from this region was published by PrimaPagina Editore and the Romagna chapter of AIS (Italiana Association  of Sommelier). The guide honors 26 wines produced by 22 wineries, chosen among the 238 variety tasted by the AIS sommeliers.

The Sangiovese di Romagna is by far the most honored with 16 awards, 13 of which are the Riserva type. Among the winners are an Albana di Romagna DOCG Passito, a Grappa di Albana Invecchiata, two DOC Colli di Rimini, including a Rebola Passito made with Pignoletto grapes, and various IGT from the Rubicone, Ravenna and Forlì wine areas.

"The goal of our effort," explains Gian Carlo Mondini, President of AIS Romagna, "is to provide a picture, as accurate and clear as possible, of Romagna's enological panorama. This part of the region offers a lively wine experience which is expanding but still widely unexplored, especially with regards to young and small producers that are relatively new to the market."

Easy and quick to consult, the guide is comprised of a general introduction and the main body dedicated to 119 wine producers, divided into six chapters corresponding to the main Romagna vine zone, which is: Imola, Faenza, Ravenna, Forlì, Cesena and Rimini. In this section there are pages dedicated to the four Romagna Wine Roads (Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori dei Colli di Forlì-Cesena, or Wine and Flavor Road of the Forlì-Cesena Hills, Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori dei Colli di Rimini, or Wine and Flavor Road of the Rimini Hills, la Strada del Sangiovese e dei Sapori delle Colline di Faenza, or Sangiovese and Flavor Road of the Faenza Hills and the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori dei Colli d’Imola, or Wine and Flavor Road of the Imola Hills), including tourist , enogastronomical and cultural itineraries, the maps and other usable information.

For each featured wine includes a technical file featuring:

  •  Type of grapes
  •  Alcohol by volume
  •  Number of bottles produced
  •  Indicative price in enoteca (wine bar).

In addition, the wines that were awarded 75 plus points includes the organolectic file and the following additional information:

  •  Color
  •  Perfume
  •  Flavor
  •  Suggested food pairing
  •  Service temperature.

Published in a first printing of 10.000 copies, the guide is sold at all Romagna's newsstands combined with the magazine "Mare & Monti" ("Ocean & Mountains"). In addition, it is sold as a standalone in all regional bookstores for 7.90 Euros, while in other regions it will be soon available online at www.romagnadeivini.it for 10.60 Euros, including shipping and handling.
