Tuscan Sun Festival: A Treat For the Senses
Loris Scagliarini - July 16, 2005

Tuscan Sun FestivalSomething's happening under the Tuscan sun of Cortona, in Italy.

From August 5 to 21, 2005 the Tuscan town located about 100 miles north of Rome, will hold the third annual 'Tuscan Sun Festival', whose theme is 'The Art of Living'. The extravaganza includes a potpourri of seemingly unrelated activities such as food and wine tastings, art exhibitions, lectures, concerts, yoga classes, massages and visits to ancient Roman baths. Then again, the theme itself, ''The Art of Living', is what holds it all together.

The festival was co-founded by its director, Barrett Wisman, chairman of IMG Artists and a pianist with the Accademia Musicale Chigiana (Chigiana Musical Academy) in Siena, Italy, and Nina Kotova, who is the artistic director as well along with noted writer Frances Mayes, author of 'Under the Tuscan Sun', from which the eponymous film was made.

This year's festival offers performances from artists such as famed dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, who will have a showing of his photographs, and top-notch musicians such as Lang Lang, Thomas Hampson, Maxim Vangeroz, Midori, Helène Grimaud, Sara Chang, Salvatore Accardo and American composer, John Corigliano, among others. Exclusive exhibits of and lectures about artworks from ancient Rome through the Renaissance, Baroque and contemporary eras will also be part of the festival.

The epicurean horizons of the festivals' participants will be expanded by famed chefs Cesare Casella of Beppe Restaurant in New York, and Silvia and Riccardo Baracchi of Il Falconiere Restaurant in Cortona.

Unwind and breathe deeply at yoga classes, bask in the luxury of Tuscany's premier spas, get lost in the art exhibits and music, but don't overlook the glorious gourmet foods and titillating quality wines.

"We are creating a multi-faceted, multi-sensory event that unites the world's best classical music with intimate experiences of the pleasures of life in Tuscany," said Barrett Wissman.

Tickets range from €20 to €100 (see current cost in other currencies).
