Poderi Rosso Giovanni Staff Writer - May 1, 2006
The Company of the Month for May 2006 is the Azienda Vitivinicola Poderi Rosso Giovanni, a Piedmontese grape producer and winery located in Agliano Terme, in the province of Asti, one of the best zones for the cultivation of vines, in particular for the production of high quality Barbera d'Asti.
The over ten hectares of hilly vineyards have optimal sun exposure and are all planted with high quality Barbera vines. The soil is rich in marl and calcareous components, a characteristic which, combined with the favorable microclimate, contributes to creating the conditions necessary for the complete ripening of the grapes.
In a constant search to ever-improve the wine quality, Lionello Rosso, who represents the current generation of the Rosso family, dedicates his loving and attentive supervision to the grapes' evolution in the vineyards and to the winemaking procedures in the cellar. This producer is so committed to the quality of the wines produced by the family estate, that in 2002 he did not bottle his product, as it did not met his self-imposed high quality standards.
The low density of vines – just 5,000 plants per hectare – are ensured by applying severe pruning, as well as limiting the foliage by thinning out excess leaves, which contribute to developing the optimum organoleptic characteristics of the Barbera grape.
The result of traditional vinification methods, paired with with state-of-the-art production technology, are superior wines with unique personality.
The Barbera d'Asti ages in stainless steel vats and in barriques, before being bottled and let refine for at least four months before distribution.
