People in the area have always known that the Romangia history was strongly linked to that of vine cultivation. Recently though, this common knowledge has been confirmed by archeological remains found in a site near the village of Geridu, in the municipality of Sorso.
Here the archeologists found medieval carbonized grape seeds, curved knives used to prune the vines as well as to harvest the bunches, ceramic mugs used to drink wines and vases used to preserve the wine.
In the area know as Pedraia, in the municipality of Sorso, the researchers found a winemaking facility dug into the calcareous rock, with the year 1602 carved on a column.
It's uncertain which vines might have been grown in this area before the arrival of the Spaniards, what is certain though, is that not only vines like the Cannonau and Moscato, but Vermentino and Monica as well, found in Romangia an ideal environment.
Sorso-Sennori stands for good wine. The sandy and calcareous soil with traces of clay, the excellent sun exposure, the dry and windy microclimate, the balmy air, enriched by the precious salty aromas exaling from the Gulf of Asinara, are all factors that contribute to creating an excellent environment for these types of grapes.
The Winery
The Romangia cooperative opened in 1996, building upon its experience with the old Cantina Sociale di Sorso-Sennori, founded in 1955.
The number of vintners' members has grown consistently since then, and currently the winery counts on about 70 hectares (around 173 acres) of vineyards, located in the municipalities of Sorso and Sennori. The production philosophy of the cooperative is based upon the promotion of of the native vines which have traditionally expressed the best winemaking potential of the Romangia zone.
- The Moscato, dense and honey-like, is the unequaled champion of sensual perfume. At Verona's 38th Vinitaly this wine was awarded the Gran Menzione award.
The average age of the vine is over 50 years.
Alcohol 13.5% by vol.
- The Cannonau, which is trained as small tree in the scorchingly hot sands of Romangia, produces an extraordinary concentration of natural alcohol and perfumes.
The average age of the vine is over 50 years.
Alcohol 14% by vol.
- The Vermentino delivers pleasant perfumes, different from those of the white wines from neighboring Gallura or other Sardinia wine zones. This is thanks to the great sun exposure that the vineyards enjoy in Romangia as well as the salty breeze from nearby Gulf of Asinara.
The average age of the vine is over 20 years.
Alcohol 13.5% by vol.
- The elegant Monica grape found an ideal environment in the vineyards surrounding Sorso, a unique example in the northern part of the island. In fact, Monica is typically a grape that thrives in the southern part of Sardinia.
The average age of the vine is 30 years.
Alcohol 12.5% by vol.
The Cantina Romangia di Sorso e Sennori makes excellent wines with the above native grapes, thanks to the passionate vintners' dedication in the field, the use of cutting edge technology at the winery, an ambitious investment program and the collaboration with some of the best enologists currently operating in the Italian scene.
