Castellari BergaglioWe close 2005 introducing the forward looking Piedmont winery, Castellari Bergaglio Azienda Vitivinicola, located in a quiet, green landscape in Gavi, in the province of Alessandria as December's 'Company of the Month'. This winemaking family has handed down the love for the vine and its precious products over four generations. To this day, the members of the family work with passion and enthusiasm, striving to better the quality of their wines, drawing from the creativity, personality and know-how of the people working with them.

The Estate
Located 300 meters (about 985 feet) above sea level, the the vineyards and winery overlook the Rovereto area countryside, characterized by typical reddish soil rich in clay and iron. Here the noble Cortese vine variety, used to make the excellent white Gavi wine, has found its ideal environment, and thrives.

The vineyards extend over ten hectares (about 25 acres) and produce grapes with good sugar content, well balanced with acidity. The wines have a harmonious, delicate bouquet, which maintain their typical characteristics for several years.

The winery is run by Mario Bergaglio, his wife, Vanda Castellari, and their son Marco according to well established local winemaking traditions, but they pay close attention to cutting edge technologies. The family supervises every phase of the production, from grape growing in the vineyards, to winemaking at the winery. The modern methods applied throughout the process, are used to monitor their prized product, as well as to enhance the heritage of the Gavi wine itself, re-launching its unquestionable historical and cultural potential.

The Products
In opposition to the widespread belief that white wines must be drunk young, Castellari Bergaglio maintains, and proves, that though their wines are perfectly ready for consumption after a few months in bottles, they remain that way for several years thereafter. When opening a bottle of Gavi aged in good conditions for a few years, one flavors enjoyable sensations. This surprise those who are firmly convinced that white wines should be drunk young greatly. In fact, the youthful edge gives way to a more mature, complex range of aromas with ageing.

Castellari Bergaglio lin of products include:

  • Gavi DOCG di Tassarolo "Fornaci"
  • Gavi DOCG di Gavi "Rolona"
  • Gavi DOCG di Gavi "Rovereto-VignaVecchia"
