Atop the gentle slopes of a hill in the upper Maremma of Grosseto, just a short walk from the seashore and at just five kilometers (about 3.1 miles) from the Medieval town of Massa Marittima, are the vineyards and olive groves of the Fattoria Coliberto, surrounded by the typical Mediterranean bushes knows as macchia.
When the Conti Reggiannini family purchased the estate in 1975, they decided, against the advice of many neighbors, to plant vines in an area that, at the time, was believed to be unfit for viticulture.
Time though, has proven them right. In fact, the area around Massa Marittima was later recognized as a promising wine zone and, in 1994 it became the heart of the 'Monteregio di Massa Marittima' DOC zone.
In addition to growing traditional Tuscan vines, such as Sangiovese, Trebbiano, Malvasia and Vermentino, there are Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay vines as well. The grapes, all of which come from the family vineyards, are carefully selected at harvest time and made into wine in the modern estate winery.
The Products
The estate is currently managed by Claudia Reggiannini, the owner-viticulturist daughter of the founders. Under her direction, quality wines strongly affected by the terroir and expressing the characteristics of the Monteregio di Massa Marittima DOC to the fullest, are produced.
Apart from the Rosso (Red), the Morello and the Bianco (White), two other wines are made from select grapes when the harvest is particularly good. These are the Thesan Riserva, a great, elegant and harmonious red, with noteworthy persistence, and Aurora, a fine, delicate, high quality white.
The product line is rounded out by two varieties of Grappa di Monteregio: white and riserva, as well as the minimum, but truly high quality, fragrant and fruity extra virgin olive oil.
All products can be tasted and purchased at the estate.
