After being hired to take all photographs for a Guatemalan art and antiques web site, Mr. Scagliarini moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, switched from the camera to a computer and contracted with Microsoft to design merchants’ web presences on sidewalk.com online city guides for the San Francisco and Seattle editions. That was 1996 and the World Wide Web was just two years old. No one could have foreseen how much this new technology would change our lives. When Microsoft wrapped up the project and sold it to City Search, Mr. Scagliarini went on building many web sites for small and medium-sized businesses, artists and non-profit organizations. Finally, in one of many trips to nearby Wine Country, he had an epiphany: bring together the passions of a lifetime, photography, writing, web development and wine making, while contributing to increasing Italian wines awareness in the US. After all, Italy competes year in year out with France as the major world producer of wines and gives the wine lovers such prize-winning wines as the Brunello di Montalcino, Barbera, Sangiovese, Chianti, Nebbiolo, Teroldego, Aleatico, Grignolino, and Dolcetto among the reds, and Trebbiano, several varieties of Moscato, Pinot Grigio, Verdicchio, Prosecco, Cortese, and Corvo di Salaparuta among the whites. |
WineCountry.IT is located in beautiful Marin County, California, across the Golden Gate Bridge from charming and technologically advanced San Francisco and just a relaxing half-hour drive to world famous California Wine Country. This puts us in a geographically prominent position which enables us to take advantage of top professionals’ know-how in the grape-growing, wine making, and wine distribution industry, as well as of the technology that supports and develops both the Internet and the ever more important search engine optimization technologies.
The Founders |
In those years, Mr. Scagliarini developed a passion for the industry than never succeeded completely while he was pursuing a successful career as a photographer and writer active in both the advertising and leisure/travel industries. J. D. is an American lawyer with a passion for Italy. He met Scagliarini when he hired him to build a web site for one of his business ventures. Sharing interests in similar subjects, they hit it off well, soon become friends, and also met in Italy during a trip there. From that point it was only natural for J. D. and Scagliarini to join forces to develop a network of web sites centered around Italian wines, its regional cultures and traditions, the yearly production and quality of vintages, as well as the Italian culinary art and regional specialty foods that are the perfect accompaniment to local wines. |
The Project |
WineCountry.IT is committed to building a network of Italian and English web sites each focusing on specific aspects of the wine world, from thoroughly listing importers and exporters to evaluating precious wines produced in small quantity by small vintners. As well as educating the general public about the best ways to appreciate the different wines, WineCountry.IT shows wine lovers how to serve them at the right temperature and pair them with the correct recipes, so that the wine and food complement each other in a superior taste experience. In addition, WineCountry.IT is committed to expanding the interaction and exchange of intelligence between California and Italian wineries. In this regard, we truly appreciate and support the works of organizations such as the Consorzio Cal-Italia, a group of California wineries and winemakers that grow and experiment with Italian grapes producing such wines as Aglianico, Aleatico, Barbera, Dolcetto, Freisa, Grignolino, Nebbiolo, Refosco, Sangiovese, Teroldego among the reds, and Arneis, Cortese, Fiano, Malvasia Bianca, Moscato Bianco, Pinot Bianco and Grigio, Tocai Friulano, and Trebbiano among the whites. |
